The Princess Bride (and why I’m mad there aren’t more like it)

I’m going to admit it…I am really, really biased. I love this movie waaaayyyy too much to be a neutral source for a review. But whatevs, imma do it anyways.

This is a movie that really, really, could have been terrible. The plot’s pretty corny, and the script (if put into the wrong hands) could have failed gloriously. The movie found the only real way to fix that though…it embraces how bad it is, and compensates with great acting (except maybe on Robin Wright‘s part) and going balls out (i.e. it realizes that if it’s going to be bad, make it so bad that it’s GREAT). They also found Rob Reiner to direct, who is responsible for Spinal Tap and therefore a god.

I’m not going to lie, Buttercup and Wesley are  kind of  a sideshow for me. I’m mostly in it for Fezzik (Andre the Giant) and Inigo (Mandy Patinkin…who was also on Criminal Minds…wtf mate…). Their bromance, for me anyways, comes off way more endearing and heartfelt. Although Billy Crystal‘s cameo is pretty fantastic too.

It’s an epic, it’s a comedy, it’s a love story. And it’s what movies (and their modern egos) have forgotten how to do.
